The selection process is expected to end today. Event organiser Raisedon Baya said they were conducting the first round of preliminaries at different Bulawayo schools.

Baya said the move was aimed at nurturing drama and theatre for development in schools.

A total 12 schools will get a chance to perform in this year’s festival, with eight schools being drawn from Bulawayo while the other four will be from other provinces in country.

“As we speak right now, we are at Townsend High School where we are selecting schools to perform at the festival. Schools that will excel will earn themselves an opportunity to perform in the city’s prestigious festival,” he said.

Baya noted that this year’s theme for secondary schools drama will be “Too Young To Get Married”.

He said such events were key in developing school students’ mentality, be it in social life or in economic terms, so that they could become masters of their own destiny.

“When these pupils perform in such events, they highlight key issues that affect them on a daily basis and through observation, they put this into practice and they educate others about the importance of life in its broad perspective. And they manage to become makers of their own destiny,” he said.

Intwasa Arts Festival KoBulawayo, is one of the country’s premiere festivals and over the past years it has managed to attract artistes from all over the world, although it is a community initiative.

The major thrust of the festival is to ensure the growth of the arts industry.

Intwasa incorporates various art genres and it also targets exposing budding talents within the arts industry through such programmes as drama for secondary schools.
