TWO former Mthwakazi Liberation Front activists Paul Siwela and Charles Thomas, facing treason charges, are today expected to file a High Court application seeking a cancellation of their bail conditions.

Their lawyer Sindiso Mazibisa confirmed that they will file an application for the easing up of the remaining conditions today at the Bulawayo High Court.

“Thomas and Siwela will file application to cancel all bail conditions,” he said. “Those include the return of their passports, which are still with the High Court Registrar and their ban from attending or addressing rallies or meetings.”

In April Bulawayo High Court judge Justice Martin Makonese endorsed the relaxation of Siwela and Thomas’s bail conditions, which the Attorney General (AG)’s Office accepted after the two filed an urgent chamber application at the courts.

However, he ruled that they must not be given their passports or attend political gatherings or meetings.

Siwela and Thomas, together with John Gazi, were arrested in March 2011 and are facing treason charges after they allegedly called for the violent overthrow of the government.

Gazi’s lawyer Sabelo Sibanda was not reachable yesterday to comment on whether he would also file a similar application.

Court hearings into the treason case were adjourned after the trial judge Justice Nicholas Ndou resigned December last year.
