MDC leader Welshman Ncube has fired back at Deputy Prime Minister Thokozani Khupe, following her utterances last week on what role he would play should the MDC formations agree on an election pact.

There have been suggestions that Khupe should stand aside and allow the MDC leader to be Vice-President of a united MDC, but the DPM described these as nonsense.

Ncube, however, scoffed at Khupe’s comments yesterday, saying the Makokoba legislator was delusional and he instead was focussed on the presidency.

“I don’t deal with hypothetical issues,” he said on the sidelines of a rally at Cross Dete in Matabeleland North. “I am running for the office of the President.

“Khupe is living in a make believe world, I live in the real world. She is delusional.”

There is no love lost between the two, following a bitter 2008 election campaign for the Makokoba constituency, where the MDC-T vice-president prevailed.

Khupe insisted that she won the last election and there was no way she was going to step aside for someone she defeated in the polls.

In recent weeks, calls for a pact between the two MDCs have increased, with sources revealing that there was consensus within the two parties’ upper echelons that there must be an agreement.

However, there are reports that some members were opposed to the pact, as they feared they could lose their lofty positions.
