Zanu PF secretary for administration Didymus Mutasa confirmed the development yesterday, adding the status befitted the outspoken former Mines minister, who at the time of his death led a parliamentary committee that produced a damning report about the diamond mining sector.

“It’s true we received a letter from the province asking us to confer him with the national hero status, but you know that is not an order given to us.

“It was not a commanding letter, it was asking and we gave what we saw fit,” he said.

“We decided to give liberation hero status and we have communicated that to his family.” The liberation hero is the least among three titles of honour bestowed on outstanding party cadres with national hero and provincial hero being the highest and second highest respectively.

Mourners were yesterday still gathered at the ex-minister’s home at number 96 Bedford Road in Christon Bank, although it was not yet clear when and where he would be buried.

Chindori-Chininga died in a mysterious crash after his Jeep Cherokee car rammed into a tree at a T-junction along the Guruve-Harare Road, raising speculation that he could have been a victim of internal party fights.

In March last year, Chindori-Chininga survived another horror crash after his Mercedes-Benz collided with a pickup truck near Concession.

The Guruve South legislator left government under mysterious circumstances in 2004 following a mini-Cabinet reshuffle by President Robert Mugabe and last year lost his Zanu PF Copac post after being labelled a sellout.
