GOKWE — The trial of two police officers facing allegations of soliciting bribes from villagers found with mbanje plants in their gardens was yesterday further deferred after their lawyer failed to turn up in court.

Stephen Muchinazo (25) of Mafungautsi and Emmanuel Joel Muchemedzi (24) based at Sesame base station in Gokwe, are accused of demanding bribes of $600 each from three villagers they arrested for allegedly growing mbanje in their gardens.

The court heard that the lawyer for the two could not make it as he was allegedly committed elsewhere.

They pleaded not guilty to criminal abuse of public office charges when they appeared before Gokwe resident magistrate Sheppard Mjanja on Wednesday.

They were remanded out of custody to July 23 for continuation of trial.
