Zimbabwe will be expected to field boys and girls’ teams in disciplines of football, basketball and volleyball and netball in the regional student games.

National Association of Secondary Heads (Nash) vice-president Arthur Maphosa yesterday told Southern Eye Sport that the athletes will converge in the city in preparation for the 2013 edition of the games.

“The training camp for the Cossasa teams has been tentatively set for Bulawayo. We are expecting to begin camp on August 19, but we are still finalising on the camping venues,” he said.

The girls football team was selected during the Copa Coca-Cola national finals that were held in Mutare last weekend. Vainona High School duo of Greater Bande and Fungai Bvekwa will be making their second appearance in the Cossasa games after they were drafted into the girls’ football team which represented the country in Namibia last year.

Maphosa said they were hoping to surpass last year’s achievements. “Our aim is to improve our medal haul because last year we only failed to get a medal in boys’ football. However, this year we want to get many medals. Where we got silver we want gold and we also want to maintain our performances where we got our gold medals,” he said.

The volleyball teams was selected during the Nash volleyball finals that were held at Inyathi High School last month while the teams for the other sporting disciplines are yet to be selected.

A total of 150 athletes are expected to represent the country in the games. Maphosa said they were appealing for support to ensure that the teams travel to Lesotho for the games.
