SOME enterprising Zimbabweans service providers are reportedly illegally opening DStv accounts for people in Zimbabwe to allow them access to SABC channels, following their disconnection on free to air decoders.

In a statement, Multichoice Zimbabwe said there are no agencies in Zimbabwe that offered SABC channels. “We wish to advise our valued subscribers that the SABC channels are not cleared for viewing in Zimbabwe,” the company said. “Therefore, DStv does not carry these channels on their bouquets in Zimbabwe.” However, there are some dealers who are selling DStv decoders with SABC channels.

“I do not know how they do it, but there are certain companies around the city where you pay and they connect you,” a Bulawayo resident said. “The charges go up to $80 for a full bouquet.” But Multichoice Zimbabwe insists that it does not have agents that provide SABC in Zimbabwe. “There are no legitimate or legal agencies in Zimbabwe that are able to offer SABC services, as this would constitute an illegal activity, as it is a breach of international copyright law,” the company said.
