Mbekezelo Mpofu (30) of Ngagula Road in Hwange, pleaded not guilty to one count of negligent driving and that of driving under the influence of alcohol, when he appeared before Lupane magistrate Aelene Munamati on Tuesday.

He was remanded out of custody to August 27 for continuation of trial. Prosecutor Sanders Sibanda told the court that on February 1 this year at 7am, Mpofu was driving towards Bulawayo.

When he got to the 46km peg along the Bulawayo–Victoria Falls Road, he lost control of the vehicle and veered to the opposite lane, where he hit a pupil, who was walking with other children to school.

The pupil was seriously injured and had his left leg fractured.

Police were called to the scene, leading to Mpofu’s arrest. After they tested him with a breathalyser they discovered that his blood had a high level of alcohol content.
