MASVINGO – The MDC-T has annointed a former Masvingo district chairman David Charirwe as the new mayor, a senior official has revealed.
REPORT BY TATENDA CHITAGU
Charirwe, an accountant at a post office, was selected ahead of outgoing mayor Alderman Femius Chakabuda and provincial chairperson Wilstuff Stemere.
MDC-T provincial secretary and outgoing Youth deputy minister Tongai Matutu told Southern Eye that Charirwe was chosen by the MDC-T top brass after being strongly recommended by the provincial executive. “It is true that Charirwe has been appointed the next mayor,” he said.
“He was approved by our national leadership, although the decision was reached in consultation with the province that had recommended him.”
The selection is likely to escalate a war of words between the MDC-T and Local Government minister Ignatius Chombo who insists that a mayor can only be chosen from elected councillors.
Party leader Morgan Tsvangirai is expected in Bulawayo today where a decision on the city’s mayor will be made.
University lecturer Mandla Nyathi is the front runner for the post.
