TWO employees at Zim-Midas and Nissan Clover Leaf, accused of defrauding the company of over $55 000, have been placed off remand, as the State indicated it was not yet ready to prosecute.

REPORT BY SILAS NKALA

Bernard Makuyana (31) a parts manager at Zim-Midas and Nissan Clover Leaf and Rukudzo Maya (30) a salesman, pleaded not guilty to fraud when they appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Takundwa Witness Mtetwa.

They were placed off remand and the magistrate advised them that their case will proceed by way of summons.

The court heard that between December 6 2012 and May 3 2013 the two, with another accomplice, Francis Jenjezwa, still at large, were at Zim-Midas number 58 Main Street in Bulawayo, where they allegedly agreed to raise a false invoice purporting that spare parts needed by a customer were not in stock.

Makuyana allegedly authorised the purchase of the foresaid spares.

The goods or spares would then purportedly be purchased by Maya and Jenjezwa and the spoils would be converted to their own use.

To conceal the offence, Makuyana allegedly made a false entry into the Zim-Midas stock on the pretext that the goods were received and later transferred into the Zim-Midas, Nissan Clover Leaf branches and customers.

The offence was discovered when a stock-take was conducted on May 3 this year.

Makuyana allegedly chose to avoid taking part, leading to an internal audit being conducted, which exposed the anomaly.

This led to the arrest of the two. Jenjezwa is still at large.

Zim-Midas suffered prejudice of $55 023,42 and nothing was recovered.
