Very few people have ever thought about the gym in terms of the health and fitness attributes linked to the business of running gymnasiums as health institutions.

That has been marketing consultant and lecturer Harry Madzivanyinka, wife Thandi and Rodgers Sauramba’s thrust after taking over Body Active Fitness Centre from former Matabeleland Bodybuilding and Fitness Association chairman Tendai Chaipa, who has since relocated from the City of Kings to Harare.

“Money comes in the long-term, but we have been driven by the passion to improve people’s lives and that is what Body Active is all about. Our main thrust is the fitness and well-being of people in the society at large. Fitness has become a new phenomenon the world over. What we have in mind is for people to live longer and healthier lives,” Madzivanyika said.

“There has always been this feeling in our people that gym is about building muscles, but we do quite a number of things that include toning, rehabilitation and endurance training as well as sauna where we have people come and socialise.”

Madzivanyika said Body Active has seen patients being referred by doctors for rehabilitation.

It also has clients that are paid for by some companies in the city and one of the biggest football clubs in Bulawayo Chicken Inn, train at the club.

“We have had patients referred here by doctors for rehabilitation. We have actually had one patient, who I will not identify for confidentiality’s sake, who suffered a stroke and was referred here by doctors for therapy and they have greatly improved.

Some of our clients are paid for by their companies as we have endurance training,” he added.
