The league matches started last weekend instead, with three men’s games and only one for women on Saturday at Northlea High School.

In the women’s league, Lakers started their campaign with a splendid display beating Stars 96-26 Mavericks, losing finalists of the pre-season tournament, edged Milton 93-14, in a tightly contested match at Lords, narrowly losing to Kings 73-83. Stars lost to ALLC 72-37.

The league started a week after the finals of the pre-season tournament which were played at Northlea.

Unicorns narrowly dismissed Mavericks 37-31 in the men’s final to win the tournament while in the women’s category, Lakers beat Giants 38-28 to be crowned champions.

Charmaine Chirinda, the chairperson of the BBA referees’ association, last Tuesday said league matches were going to start in the first weekend of October.

However, yesterday Chirinda told Southern Eye they later on received a letter from BBA informing them of the early commencement of the league.

“We received a letter on Wednesday (last week) informing us that the league would start on Saturday September 28,” Chirinda said.

Efforts to get a comment from Opportunity Moyo, the BBA president, were fruitless as her mobile phone was unreachable. Unicorns, Milton, Malvericks, Stars, Highlanders, Kaos, Oilers, Giants, Lakers, Lords and Kings complete the 11 teams that are registered with BBA to compete in the men’s league.

The women’s league has got only five teams, Highlanders, Giants, Stars, Lakers and Oilers.
