FFAWUZ national organising secretary Runesu Dzimiri said the shop stewards were trained in basic skills such as dispute resolution, handling of grievances and engaging with employers at the workplace.
Dzimiri said the shop stewards had been empowered through the training to enable them to grasp labour rights and also to assist their colleagues at organisational level to appreciate these rights.
“Most workers do not know their rights in the workplace and are taken advantage of by employers,” he said.
“So we are saying these shop stewards can take a leading role in educating their colleagues to fight for better working conditions.”
Dzimiri said the trained workers can work as organisers, educators, monitors as well as trade union representatives in their workplace.
A participant, Simanjani Siyamufinga, said she benefited from the training as she learnt about labour issues she was not aware of before, adding she now knew how to approach her employer with work-related grievances.
