Mayor Hamutendi Kombayi yesterday told Southern Eye that workers, particularly those in the lower grades, started receiving their salaries last Friday.

However, Kombayi could not confirm whether council’s revenue inflow had improved.

“Our workers, and in particular those in the lower grades, started receiving their salaries last Friday,” he said.

“We will be paying those in the middle and upper grades in the coming weeks.

“But I can’t confirm whether our cashflows have improved because at the moment we are concentrating on setting up council committees and once our finance (committee) is in place, we will be in a position to know the extent of our revenue problems.”

Gweru council’s financial situation worsened following a government directive for all local authorities to writeoff debts accumulated by residents between February 2009 and June this year.
