The tournament runs annually at Christian Brothers College Bulawayo (CBC) with this year’s event set to run Friday to Sunday.

Gifford High School sports director Collett Murombo said it was possible for them to win the tournament again this year.

“We would like to pick up from where we left last year. This is a tournament that involves private schools like Falcon College, Prince Edward, Petra just to mention a few, but we will try our level best to retain the title,” Murombo said.

He also said his charges did well winning the tournament last year as they proved that government schools could outclass private schools, although private institutions were always equipped with proper sporting facilities.

“We intend to prove that government schools can also do better than private schools who in most cases have that advantage of having proper facilities yet on the other hand government schools do not have proper sporting facilities,” he said.

Last year’s tournament won by Gifford, was sponsored by NetOne, but the organisers were not reachable to reveal the sponsor for this year’s edition.

Schools that take part in this tournament include Falcon College, Gifford, Milton, Prince Edward, Gaudrich, Watershed, Petra just to mention a few.

The defending champions beat Watershed in last year’s finals to claim glory.

Mthokozisi Kapala from Gifford was voted the player of the tournament.

Gifford will be out to defend the title without the services of Kapala reported to have transferred to Australia.
