Masiyephambili marathon chairperson of the organising committee Thamsanqa Ncube said the fun walk would be used as warm-up to the main race.

“We got into terms with the ZITF after they informed us of their event which we later on agreed to call Masiyephambili Fun Walk as we all celebrate 70 years of the city’s recognition. The walk is open to everyone who wishes to take part. Registration fee is $1 and I hope athletes will take advantage of this event to stretch their muscles as they prepare for the big race,” he said.

Ncube said they would put a Masiyephambili marathon registration desk as the fun walk clashes with the big registration date.

“As an organising committee, we would like to inform athletes that Saturday (tomorrow) is the big registration day for all athletes who will take part in the Masiyephambili marathon at the City Hall, but this will not stop those who want to participate in the fun walk because we are going to have a registration desk at ZITF as well,” he said.

Bulawayo athletes board secretary-general Dailes Bingadadi confirmed that all was set for the marathon.

Top athletes are expected to take part in the maiden marathon, with South Africa-based long-distance runners such as veteran Samukeliso Moyo, Thabitha Tsatsa and Rutendo Nyahora already in the country for the race.

Winners for the 42km race in both the male and female categories will walk away $1 500 richer, while $600 will be at stake for winners of the 21km race.

The marathon will also see the participation of wheelchair athletes and 3-by-7km relays for junior athletes.
