In a letter addressed to Ncube, Mugaradziko said the reasons for his resignation were purely personal.

Although Mugaradziko was not immediately available for comment, he reportedly noted in his resignation letter that he wanted to focus on education.

“I write to resign from the MDC party, both as a member and as a portfolio secretary. The reasons why I am resigning from the party are purely personal.

“I need time to concentrate on my family and business. I have also recently enrolled with Africa University to study for Masters in Peace, Leadership and Governance,” Mugahadziko said.

“These competing interests all demand my attention and I have, therefore, decided to take a sabbatical from politics. I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can definitely adjust my sails to always reach my destination.”

Since its humbling defeat in the July 31 harmonised elections, the MDC has been facing serious leadership challenges including the resignation of policy director Qhubani Moyo and membership fissures over the appointment of Priscilla Misihairabwi-Mushonga to Parliament on proportional representation standing for Matabeleland South.

At one time, Mugaradziko chaired the party’s Manicaland provincial executive.

He stood as a candidate in Mutare Central constituency in the July 31 elections and lost to the MDC-T chief whip Innocent Gonese.

Contacted for comment, MDC deputy spokesperson Kurauone Chihwayi said the resignations by senior members did not signal the demise of the party.

“We are moving in to identify and solve problems that are causing the resignations. However, that has not affected the organisation. We are reorganising and we are now ready for a supersonic take-off,” Chihwayi said.
