Misihairabwi-Mushonga’s election to Parliament via proportional representation for seats reserved for women has thrown the MDC led by Welshman Ncube into turmoil resulting in the recent expulsion of the party’s Matabeleland South provincial chairperson Petros Mukwena.

Speaking to Southern Eye yesterday, Mkhosi said he had communicated his position to the party’s leadership.

“What is true is that I have told the party that if they do not remove Priscilla from the National Assembly then we will go our separate ways,” Mkhosi said.

“Priscilla is a strong believer in devolution of power that says locals should benefit from their resources and represent their people.

“For Priscilla to be imposed on Matabeleland South yet she is from Harare is unacceptable.”

Mkhosi said he had consulted the people of Mangwe district in Matabeleland South, which he used to represent in Parliament, and they had backed his position.

Mkhosi’s threats came on the heels of the resignation of former Insiza South MP Siyabonga Malandu Ncube over the same issue.

Ncube said he would no longer be part of the MDC unless Misihairabwi-Mushonga was replaced by a woman from the province.

He said they were not calling for her to step down as secretary-general, but that she returns the National Assembly seat to the deserving women of Matabeleland South.

Misihairabwi-Mushonga was transferred to Matabeleland South from her Glen Norah constituency in Harare and subsequently included on the party’s list for the women’s quota in Parliament under the new proportional representation system.
