SOUTHDOWNS Football Club look set to continue with their giant killing acts when they meet Renco Mine in the first semi-final match of the Sylvia Dube memorial tournament in the Eastern Region League on Saturday.

The match is set for Gaza Stadium in Chipinge in what promises to be an exciting encounter.
In the quarter-finals stage, Southdowns shocked last year winners, Mutare City Rovers — a Mutare Municipality-owned outfit, 4-2 in a penalty shoot-out at Sakubva Stadium after the match had ended nil-all.
Renco Mine secured their semi-final berth also after winning 4-2 win against former Premier Soccer League side Masvingo United coincidentally via a penalty shoot-out.
The match had ended 1-1 in regulation time.
Another semi-finalist Gaza Gunners, who qualified for semis after beating Moses Chunga-led side Hippo Valley 2-0 in Chipinge, will take on Ruwa United in Chiredzi at Chishamiso Stadium 24 hours later.
In an interview with sister paper NewsDay Sport, Eastern Region administrator Tedius Machawire said this year’s tournament was full of surprises, refusing to disclose the total sponsorship package of the tournament.

“There is high level of competition this year. What makes this year’s tournament interesting is that there have been many surprises. Some teams that were favourites to win the tournament this year are already out,” he said.
“Some teams that stormed into the semis were not expected to reach that stage.
“This year we are hoping to see one of the best finals. At the moment, I can’t reveal the total sponsorship package of the tournament,” he added.
The tournament is bankrolled by Zifa president Cuthbert Dube in memory of his late wife Sylvia.
