“The tournament is for the 10 best chess players. We are rating them according to what they have achieved this year. The players were selected on their performances in all the monthly tournaments held this year,” Mutiforo said.

This year the Bulawayo Chess Association had seven tournaments, the Hillside, NUST, Easter, Independence, Africa Day Open, Winter festival and Khami team tournament.

National University of Science and Technology (NUST) chess club trio of Castro Sibanda, Kudakwashe Sibanda, Eshward Mudumo, Bulawayo Chess Club’s Thabang Moyo, Denis Mashukudu, Ricky Malaba, Nigel Mabiza, Russel Dzete, Knowledge Ndlovu and the independent Bruce Mhondiwa complete the list of ten players who will take part in the tournament.

Castro Sibanda clinched last year’s edition and will be hoping for more glory.

Mutoforo said due to the improved attendance of chess players to the tournaments they expect an improved standard in the second edition.

“We have been receiving a good turnout in our tournaments so we are sure this will improve the standard of the sport, even players themselves have gained confidence because of having such tournaments,” he said.

The winner of the tournament will walk away with $200, with the first runner up getting $150 while the second runner up will pocket $100.

Mutoforo said the Chess association is still looking for sponsors.

“We welcome any sponsorship because the monetary prizes set for the winners and the runners up is not enough for such a tournament, we also wish to give prizes to other players taking part in the tournament,” he alluded.
