Believe it or not, champions ceaselessly searching for glory are competitive because they are aware that despite competition’s capacity to toughen battles, it carries with it some implicit rewards.

Competition is inherent in the business world and in everyday existence. The very premise of surviving is about competing, either with oneself or with others.

While everyone agrees that competition is a powerful force, only a few seem to realise that it is a positive force that drives champions into achieving greatness. The motivation to compete often promotes survival and success.

Contending with competitors to prove that one is indeed a victor is one of the most fulfilling experiences that most, if not all of us would want to identify with. Just that feeling of accomplishing a goal can be intrinsically rewarding indeed.

Given its ability to sweeten victories, competition should encourage anyone to become outstanding in their field.

There are many ways in which champions reach their goals, fulfil their dreams and successfully accomplish various endeavours, one of which is to live up to their self imposed high standards.

They draw this unique ability through competing with veteran players in their field.

Interestingly, competitive environments are excellent breeding grounds for the creation, implementation and nurturing of high growth business ventures.

Perhaps the most important aspect here is acquiring the ability to thrive during competitive moments where most people find it hard to pursue their dreams in fear that their efforts might be surpassed by those of competitors.

Certainly, to great achievers, competition is the life blood of their success. Competition allows them to stand out and eventually be renowned for having overcome all the barriers that were existent in the field.

Competition can be successfully applied at the workplace in the form of co-operative competition, where a group sets a goal and pursues it together. Successfully pursuing these set goals enhances motivation, job pleasure and bonding.

How exciting is it to emerge a victor having gone through a fierce competition!

I have often observed that even when starting a new business venture, one of the first discouragements that most new players in the field are bombarded with is the issue of existent stiff competition.

Mistakenly, a picture is painted of how the competition is a hindrance to venturing into a potentially high profit venture.

My encouragement to those who are planning to establish their own businesses, but are sceptical of doing so due to the belief that their businesses would not strive as a result of the existence of already well-established players: Brace yourself for the competition, that’s what will separate you from the rest.

Being competitive requires self control, discipline, maturity and well planned decision-making. Competition encourages growth and is able to push most people to excel hence becoming a very strong motivator.

  • No guts, no glory

Becoming successful entails one becoming too determined to be defeated. When faced with a new scenario or venture where you feel threatened by opponents, contenders and competitors, remember this; “no guts, no glory”.

Be courageous enough to face the implications and risks associated with venturing into your project despite the presence of competition.

  • Adapt to change, stay fit

There has been an increase than ever before, of the survival of the fittest approach to all aspects of life and only those who are able to adapt to the changes can survive the competition.

Andrew Carnegie puts it clearly: “While the law of competition may be sometimes hard for the individual, it is best for the race, because it ensures the survival of the fittest in every department.”

One way in which champions keep themselves fit is to feed themselves with knowledge about their field of interest. Champions always want to keep their knowledge basket full such that when the time comes for change to take place, they would be well equipped to adopt in a well informed manner.

Revive your desire to learn new things, to improve in a certain field of study and to strengthen yourself in all your shortfalls till you get to the stage you desire to reach.

  • Use veteran player as case study

Instead of becoming so overwhelmed with the existing gap between you and your competitor, why not use the competitor as a case study or a lesson as to how business is best run and how you can eventually improve your own?

Instead of viewing competitors as enemies of progress in the business field, great achievers view them as enablers and catalysts of their own success.
