THE senior national women’s football team, the Mighty Warriors, will play their Lesotho counterparts in this year’s edition of the traditional Unity Cup match at Rufaro Stadium on December 22.

HENRY MHARA SPORTS REPORTER In a letter to Zifa by Lesotho Football Association dated November 12, the Mountain Kingdom State has accepted to send a team, expected to arrive in Harare four days prior to the match.

“The Lesotho Football Association accepts your invitation that our women’s senior team play with your team on Sunday 22 for the Unity Cup as per the terms stipulated in the invitation,” part of the letter written by the Lesotho Football Association secretary-general Mokhosi Mohapi, reads.

The two teams met in Maseru two weeks ago where they played two friendly matches.

The Mighty Warriors, who are using the matches to prepare for the Caf African Women’s Championships qualifiers set to begin next February, won the games 5-1 and 6-1 respectively.

Just after the Lesotho match, the local women will fly out to Cairo for another scheduled international match against Egypt on December 25.

A knockout tournament involving 12 league teams is on the cards later this month, at which the squad to face Lesotho and Egypt would be selected.

Another friendly match with one of the continental giants has also been mooted for January, a month before the Mighty Warriors play their first round Caf African Women’s Championships qualifier against Botswana.

The African Women’s Championships finals, the women’s version of the men’s Africa Cup of Nations tournament, serves as a qualification tournament for the 2015 Canada Fifa Women’s World Cup.

Marange Resources, who financed the Mighty Warriors trip to Maseru, has committed themselves to supporting the teams’ preparations for the qualifying matches.
