The opening leg of the series saw northern region-based clubs battling it out in Harare last Friday while the southern-based clubs locked horns at Hartsfield Stadium, Bulawayo, the following day.

In a statement yesterday, the Zimbabwe Rugby Union said the best performing clubs after last week’s opening rounds in Harare and Bulawayo would battle it out in the second and third legs of the 7s series, starting this weekend.

Last weekend, the defending champions Old Georgians maintained their dominance with a win over rivals Harare Sports Club in the final of the first leg of the tournament.

Old Hararians and Dragons II (Old Georgians development team) as losing semi-finalists, also qualify for the second leg of the tournament.

In Bulawayo, Western Panthers were impressive in their win over the Matabeleland Warriors in the semi-final before sealing a deserved win with a victory over Zvishavane Bulls in the final.

Zvishavane Bulls were equally impressive in their win over Botswana University in the semi-finals and will join the eventual champions Western Panthers as the two southern region clubs.

Panthers head coach George Mukorera said Harare teams that are going to face his charges should expect stiff competition. “Whoever we are going to face from the first match of the tournament should expect a good run for their money. We are confident we are going to do our best and proceed to the next stage,” he said.

Completing the roster of men’s teams to participate in the second leg of the SPAR&Lion Lager Summer Series will be the two Barbarians select sides.

The two Barbarians select teams will be made up of the most talented players from the northern and southern region clubs which did not qualify for the tournament.

Teams: Old Georgians, Harare Sports Club, Old Hararians, Old Georgians II, Western Panthers, Zvishavane Bulls, Northern Barbarians and Southern Barbarians
