MORE than 100 teachers in Matabeleland North are unhappy with the National Association of Primary Heads (Naph) for failing to pay them for marking the Grade 7 provincial midyear examinations. LINDA CHINOBVA OWN CORRESPONDENT
The markers were supposed to be paid $200 each at the end of August after they completed marking the provincial exams, but they have still not received the money.
“We are not happy at all because up to now we still have not received our incentives despite the hard work we did with much efficiency,” one of the teachers on condition of anonymity said.
The teacher said it was clear to them that there was foul play involved as Naph officials kept postponing the date they would be given their payment.
The provincial exams programme was introduced five years ago to gauge the state of preparedness of Grade 7 candidates before writing the Zimbabwe Examinations Council (Zimsec) exams.
In the past, teachers had no challenges getting their remunerations as they were paid a week after marking, but it is not clear if this year’s dues would be forthcoming.
“We do not know why all of a sudden we are facing challenges getting our money. When we ask Naph officials they tell us that they will look into the matter and then all goes quiet,” one teacher from Lupane said.
It is believed that Naph held a conference in Mutare where the money meant for the markers’ payments was used to finance the event.
