Bulawayo Chiefs secretary Dumisani Sibanda confirmed yesterday.

“On Sunday we are going to have an awards winning ceremony in which we are also going to announce the new name for the club. We postponed the event which was supposed to take place earlier this month to Sunday for a number of reasons, but I can confirm that we would be having our celebrations on Sunday,” Sibanda said.

New names that have been suggested for the club by fans include Chiefs, Plumtree Chiefs and Amakhosi while others have been of the view that the name should remain unchanged.

Sibanda said the construction of the new stadium was one of the major plans for the club as they wanted to bring PSL action to Plumtree.

“We are certain that the stadium will be constructed soon. We have been at a standstill because of some technical matters. I am reliably informed that there is a team from Gwanda that is coming this side to inspect the land on which we are going to construct our stadium. I think you can get details about that from our chairperson,” he said.

Chairman Lovemore Sibanda’s mobile phone went unanswered.

Bulawayo Chiefs got promoted to the top-flight league after winning the Zifa Southern Region Division One League last month and become the second team from the border town after Black Horrors in 1979 to grace the top flight.

They finished the season with 66 points from 30 games, four ahead of runners-up Black Boots.
