Matabeleland Livestock Investment Initiative chairperson Donald Khumalo said farmers in the region would be convening today to come up with measures to rev up livestock production which requires $300 million to recover.
“We are meeting tomorrow (today) to finalise on some of the measures we agreed on in our previous meeting in finding ways to fund the revival of especially cattle production in the region,” Khumalo said.
He, however, could not be drawn into disclosing more on the measures farmers in the region had agreed on in raising the required money in reviving livestock production.
“Disclosing on what we have agreed at this point might jeopardise our plans, but what I can assure you is something is being done,” he added.
Livestock production in Matabeleland is on a decline largely due to persistent drought as climatic changes continue to affect the region.
The cattle head which is the economic mainstay of the region, continues to drop due to shortage of grazing land and stockfeed as farmers continue to struggle to finance their operations due to the liquidity crunch persistent in the country.
