ZIMBABWE’s leading golfer Brendon de Jongé will be hoping for a solid start to the year when he makes his first appearance on the US PGA Tour in 2014 at the Sony Open in Honolulu, Hawaii, tomorrow.

The Sony Open will be held at the Waialae Country Club and marks the first full field event of the 2014 calendar year after last week’s unofficial Hyundai Tournament of Champions in Kapalua, Hawaii.

With a handsome prize fund of $5 600 000, the Sony Open has attracted a strong 138-member field and will see the winner taking home $1 008 000 in prize money.

Following an impressive season in 2013 and a strong finish to the year, de Jongé still searching for his first victory on the PGA Tour, will be looking for a result worthy of his status as Zimbabwe’s number one golfer.

In his last appearance in a competitive tournament de Jongé pocketed $295 000 for his fifth-place finish at the Nedbank Golf Challenge in December.

The Nedbank Golf Challenge was sanctioned by both the European and Sunshine Tours and featured an enlarged field of 30 players for the first time in its history.

De Jongé’s strong showing at the Nedbank Golf Challenge came on the back of some strong performance in South Africa and Australia.

The Zimbabwean ace finished 16 at the European Tour sanctioned Alfred Dunhill Championship in Mpumalanga province, 12th at ISPS Handa World Cup of Golf on November 24 and seventh at the Australian Masters a week earlier.

De Jongé will no doubt be hoping to draw inspiration from those results as he looks for a better performance at the Sony Open this year after finishing in a tie for 54th position at the same tournament in 2013.
