A TSHOLOTSHO villager, Lot Zondo (52), who claimed to have been tortured by Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Authority (Zimparks) rangers in October last year is still nursing injuries sustained four months after the alleged brutal attack. SENIOR REPORTER

Zondo was allegedly tortured by the rangers in a bid to extract information on the source of the cyanide used to poison over 100 elephants at the Hwange National Park last year.

The towering villager told Southern Eye on Tuesday that he still had difficulties walking and was still in pain.

“I am slowly recovering, but I have a problem with my legs. I can’t wear shoes as they trigger pain. It’s now difficult for me to work since my job involves going out into the bush as a professional tracker,” Zondo said.

“Nothing has been done to help me and no investigations have been undertaken into my torture. The only way would be to go to the courts to seek justice.”

His lawyer, Robert Ndlovu of R Ndlovu and Company, is preparing papers to file a lawsuit against Zimparks over the torture.

Zimparks has remained mum on the alleged torture despite promises it made last year to investigate.

Zimparks public relations manager Caroline Washaya-Moyo could not be reached for comment yesterday as her mobile phone went unanswered.

Zondo’s torture, which was first reported by Southern Eye in October last year, drew widespread condemnation from human rights activists.

He narrated his five-day ordeal at the hands of Zimparks rangers saying his genitals were burnt after he and others were forced to squat over braziers.

Zondo claimed then that he was suffering from a weak bladder and could also not be intimate with his wife as a result of the barbaric torture.
