Head-in-charge Philip Chikomwe said they were expecting the athletes to perform well at the national competition to come up with strong teams.

“The national championships will be held in March at Peterhouse and on the same day we will hold the national cross-country championships.

“We are expecting the athletes to do well at the nationals so that we are able to select strong teams for the international competitions,” he said.

Chikomwe said the bulk of the athletes would compete at the Cossasa Championships which will be held in Botswana sometime in May.

“The dates of most of the competitions are still to be finalised. However, we know that the bulk of athletes that will perform well will take part at the Confederations of School Sport Association of Southern Africa (Cossasa) championship in Botswana,” he said.

Last year Mashonaland East emerged winners beating Manicaland, Matabeleland South, the Midlands and Harare to the top five positions.

Chikomwe said they were also looking forward to the National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe (Naaz) national championships in which some of their athletes would take part.

“We have done fairly well in both local and international competitions and we are hopeful that we will do well again this year,” he said.

Other competitions that they are likely to take part in include the Africa Youth Championships to be held in Botswana, the Youth Olympic qualifiers also in Botswana, the Youth Olympics to be held in China in August and the World Youth Championships in the United States.

Chikomwe said Michael Songore and Nyasha Matsetse excelled in Ukraine last year.

Songore did well in Ukraine, but failed to reach the final. In the 100m heats he clocked 10,72secs which was his personal best for the season. He went on to finish third in the semi-final clocking 10,84secs.

He also did well at the Cossasa championships.

As schools open next week, they will start preparations for inter-house competitions, inter-schools, inter-zones, inter-districts culminating in the national championships.
