THE Progressive Teachers’ Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) says it has temporarily shelved its planned strike pending the outcome of a Wednesday meeting with government negotiators over salaries.

The militant PTUZ had in recent weeks vowed to press ahead with crippling nationwide boycotts when schools open tomorrow in a bid to force the government to increase basic salaries to a minimum of $1 000 a month.
Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare minister Nicholas Goche — who had warned against the strike action — on Saturday said civil servants would only know their new salaries on Wednesday when negotiators meet at the National Joint Negotiating Council.
The PTUZ had vowed to close schools when they open tomorrow if they did not know their new salary structure by today.
However, Raymond Majongwe, the PTUZ secretary-general, in a major climbdown yesterday, told Southern Eye that the organisation will now meet on Wednesday to decide on the way forward.
