Bhekimpilo Moyo (35) of Phakama high-density suburb was arrested last Thursday and appeared in court on Saturday where he pleaded guilty to charges of armed robbery before Gwanda provincial magistrate Reuben Mukavhi.

Moyo was brought to court in shackles and remanded in custody to today.

He was not asked to plead on the murder charge and was remanded to January 27.

Sibanda was found dead on Wednesday morning last week by the roadside after having been last seen leaving a bar with Moyo in the early hours of Wednesday morning. The two had been drinking together.

It is alleged that Moyo struck Sibanda with a stone on the head and then robbed him of R450.

On the robbery charge, prosecutor Khumbulani Nyoni said on Christmas eve, Moyo and an accomplice Mandlenkosi Ndlovu, still at large, hatched a plan to rob Mlungisi Gumbo at his Spitzkop house.

Armed with an iron bar, Moyo and Ndlovu went to Gumbo’s house and forced their way in. When Gumbo saw the intruders in his house, he tried to flee, but was struck on the head and shoulder with an iron bar by Moyo.

The two then ransacked the house and took R30 000, which was hidden under a mattress, and a DVD player. Gumbo spotted Moyo at Phakama business centre on Thursday evening following his arrest on allegations of murder.

The DVD player was recovered at a house in Spitzkop North Extension to which Moyo directed the police. The total value of goods and money stolen was R31 000, but only R2 000 worth of property was recovered.
