Brian Phuthi (18) and Orlando Phuthi (21), who attacked the cops in protest over the arrest of the two women they were with, appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Victor Mpofu yesterday facing charges of assaulting a peace or arresting officer.

Brian admitted head-butting the cop, but said it was not deliberate while Orlando denied the charge.

“I head-butted him by mistake. It was not deliberate,” Brian said.

The two were granted bail of $100 and remanded to February 19.

The court heard that on December 14 last year at around 1am, the Phuthi brothers were leaving a bar situated along Robert Mugabe Way in the city when they encountered police officer Talent Mupfuga (25) of Airport Road in Kingsdale, Bulawayo, on patrol with his colleagues.

The cops arrested two women the Phuthi brothers were with on allegations of loitering for purposes of prostitution.

As the cops were taking the women to the police reaction group base to fine them, Orlando approached Mupfuga and accused him of arresting his girlfriend.

He held Mupfuga by the collar while Brian head-butted him once on the mouth.

Mupfuga sustained injuries to his mouth and also lost two front teeth in the mělée. The two brothers were arrested and taken to Bulawayo Central Police Station where they were detained.
