MDC-T Mkoba MP Amos Chibaya has dismissed calls by some senior officials for party leader Morgan Tsvangirai to step down saying those calling for leadership renewal were misguided and using the wrong platform.

Addressing a rally at Mkoba Hall last Sunday, Chibaya said it was not a secret that every politician had leadership ambitions, but that succession debates should be an “in house affair”.
“What (MDC-T deputy treasurer-general Elton) Mangoma and others are doing in calling for Save (Tsvangirai’s totem) to step down is not proper.
“Even I might be interested to assume a position of leadership, I will not do so through the newspapers,” Chibaya said.
Mangoma wrote a letter to Tsvangirai last week urging him to consider stepping down as MDC-T president citing financial mismanagement and his calamitous personal love life.
This did not go down well with some party members aligned to Tsvangirai who threatened Mangoma with unspecified action and even called for his expulsion from the party.
Chibaya said issues to do with leadership should only be discussed within structures.

“When someone goes out of bounds and starts granting media interviews that the party president should step down, then the party is under siege,” Chibaya said.
Mangoma joins a growing list of senior MDC-T figures who have called for Tsvangirai’s head in the aftermath of the MDC-T’s huge loss to Zanu PF in last year’s general elections.
