Food basket declines: CCZ

THE CONSUMER basket for a family of six have declined by $3,16 to $561,56 in January from $564,72 in December due to a decrease in the food basket during the period under review, the Consumer Council of Zimbabwe (CCZ) has said.

In a statement, the consumer watchdog said the food basket decreased by $4,62 to $150,33 by the end of January .

“Detergents increased by $1,46 or 56% to $12,23 as a result of the festive seasons promotions on most products.”

Prices of other basic commodities that include fuel, sugar, bread, flour and onions remained unchanged from December prices.

While decreases were recorded in beef which went down to $3,90 from $4,80 and margarine were down 4 cents to $2,05.

The price of 1kg laundry bars increased by 17 cents to $1,17, bath soaps went up to 10 to 80 cents, tomatoes were up by 14 cents to 75 cents while tea leaves $1,85, cabbages were 10 cents up to 69 cents.

The price of washing powder and rice increased by 6 cents and 4 cents respectively to $1,45 and $1,59.

Roller meal increased to $12,30 while salt went up to 23 cents by one cent.

The country’s annual inflation shed off 0,21 percentage points to end the month at 0,33%.
