SHURUGWI, – New Dawn Mining has won a pay cut dispute with workers at its Golden Quarry gold mine after an arbitrator ruled in the firm’s favour.

Gold miners have struggled to sustain their operations in the face of rising costs and weakening prices.

Golden Quarry employees dragged their employer to court December 2013, for “unilaterally cutting their salaries by 25 percent.”

New Dawn owns Golden Quarry, Dalny and Venice mines through its Falcon Gold subsidiary.

In making his ruling on Monday, arbitrator Peter Dzimba said the workers’ case lacked merit as their representatives had agreed to the salary reduction in terms of section 12D(2) and Section 12D(3) of the Labour Act.

“In the result, I find that the claimant’s case lacks merit at law and I accordingly dismiss it. I order that each party pays its own costs,” reads part of the ruling, which was seen by The Source.

Management at the Shurugwi-based miner slashed workers salaries from July last year, following an agreement made between them and worker representatives.

However, the employees contended that the pay reduction was illegal, and alleged that the company had used threats and intimidation to force their representatives to sign the pay cut agreement.

Rejoice Moyo, Falcon Gold’s group human resources manager represented the mine, while the employees were represented by Kamusasa and Musendo legal practitioners.
