Tourney tarnishes Mugabe’s image

THE TICKET scandal which is erupting around the Bob 90 semi-final match played on Sunday between Highlanders Football Club and Harare City Football Club is a serious cause for concern.

Instead of being issued Bob 90 tickets upon paying entry fees, spectators attending the match shockingly got tickets of a Cosafa Senior Challenge Cup match played on October 31 2009 between South Africa and Mozambique.

It is reported that Zanu PF secretary for youth Absolom Sikhosana had apparently written to Zifa on Friday advising that the match had been cancelled.

Flimsy reasons have been bandied around why the match had to proceed, but it is another discussion for another day.

Sports personality Charles Mabika doubled up as the organiser of the tournament and match commentator for the game covered live on Sunday by State television.

However, when this newspaper sought clarification on how many tickets were issued to cashiers for the match and how many were not used, officials ducked and dived, and only agreed to speak strictly on condition of anonymity.

It is still not clear who among the organisers was given the gate-takings. Tournament chairman Stan Kasukuwere expressed ignorance on where the tickets came from.

This raises concerns over governance, an area in which to all intents and purposes our football and other sporting disciplines have been found wanting.

As the mirror of the society, we believe the seeming lack of transparency around the noble cause to celebrate President Robert Mugabe’s 90th birthday is of great concern especially when the prize money for the tourney is not known.

Last year some Zanu PF youths snatched more than $9 000 from council employees at Barbourfields, catering away proceeds without paying the local authority its dues.
