BMC secretary Jenny Gutherless said the race was open to members of the public and that they were aiming to stop illegal drag racing.

Drag racing is a race between two cars to determine which can accelerate faster from a standstill.

“The race is still on and we are expecting all the regulars to take part. Last year we had about 25 drivers and we are hoping for the same number this year,” said Gutherless.

She said the race was open to the public and those who were going to race are supposed to pay $5 for registration and a mandatory insurance cover.

“We would like to stress that these drags are open to the public. You do not need to have a modified car for you to take part. People should come and race the legal way. However, anybody who wishes to race has to be sober because we do not encourage drinking and driving,” Gutherless said.

Cars race according to their engine capacity from zero-1600cc and up to three litre turbo engines. Gutherless said the insurance would cover any eventualities and drivers are to pay $10 per race that they would take part in or $25 for the whole year.

Some of the racers that are expected to take part include Darrn Pragji, Zain Shah, Perry Allberry and Jimmy Zevgolis in a Golf Mark 1 that has been modified for drag racing. Dave Marsberg, Ian Gutherless and Fuzzy Walker are expected to compete in the motor bikes category.
