The group which rose to stardom with its illustrious musical Zambezi Express turns 25 years this year and has lined up various exciting programmes aimed at economically empowering its members while rebranding and celebrating its existence in the arts industry.

The outfit’s director Saimon Mambazo-Phiri said the ongoing international tours were part of their 25th anniversary theme: “25 Bigger Ideas” – an initiative aimed at empowering all members of the group.

“We are celebrating 25 years in the arts industry this year and our theme is 25 Bigger Ideas — which is a programme aimed at empowering all our members whom we appreciate for being part of this project and making it a success,” “Mbazo”, as Phiri is affectionately known in entertainment circles said.

“The ongoing international tours are part of our 25th Anniversary World Tours aimed at empowering our members.”

He said a five-member group left for Ireland’s capital Belfast last week where it is teaching music using the hot Afro-pop album Futhi Njalo produced under Sabela Music Projects in 2009. Phiri said the group is set to teach music at 27 colleges in the UK in partnership with Womad Foundation before staging follow-up shows in different venues.

Interestingly, this time around the group will be touring Europe in three different crews comprising a minimum of five members each with a leader.

The first crew is the one currently in Belfast while the second and the last crew would be set to tour Europe between June and November.
