The foodstuffs, which were a donation from Telecel, were handed over to Minister of State for Masvingo Province Kudakwashe Bhasikati at the Civil Protection Unit headquarters in Masvingo, from where relief efforts are being coordinated.

Thanking Telecel for the donation, the Minister of State, who is also Member of Parliament for Mwenezi East, said the assistance was particularly timely, as further heavy rain had resulted in tents being blown down and foodstuffs intended for those displaced by the floods being ruined.

In addition to the foodstuffs that it donated on Friday, Telecel is encouraging its customers to join it in helping the Tokwe-Mukosi flood victims by sending the word “Tokwe” to short code number 100. The message costs 10 cents, which will be donated to the flood victims.

“We felt a responsibility as Telecel to provide assistance to the victims of these floods but felt sure that our customers would also wish to assist them,” Telecel communications and branding director Obert Mandimika explained

“Hence we decided to provide our customers with an easy means of providing assistance to the flood victims. We advised our customers of this by means of a bulk message sent to our subscribers encouraging them to donate to the flood victims by sending the word Tokwe in an SMS to 100.

“I’m sure everyone can afford to donate 10 cents. It is our hope that many of our subscribers will donate more than this, which they can do by using the short code as many times as they wish,” he said.
