The competition, as exclusively revealed by our sister paper NewsDay Sport two weeks ago on the eve of the PSL elections, is worth $500 000 and becomes the second 16-team knockout competition for the league teams after the Mbada Diamonds Cup.

Last season’s top eight clubs will also participate in the Super Eight competition, which means clubs will play more midweek games this season with SuperSport, the league’s broadcast partners who will televise most of the games, happy that the season will end in December.

Kennedy Ndebele, the PSL chief executive officer said they had already made provisions for the Chibuku Super Cup in their calendar and the league will end on December 20 as announced last week.

Delta Beverages marketing director Maxen Karombo said: “It is our sincere hope that the nation will applaud the extension of the Castle Lager sponsorship for yet another three years. This strong relationship between Delta Beverages and the PSL will result in the birth of yet another new sponsorship package in 2014.

“I am proud to announce the introduction of a brand new cup competition – the new and exciting Chibuku Super Cup, a 16-team knockout tournament. This tournament will bring back memories of the Chibuku Cup held back then.

“We will hold a detailed press conference when we launch the new tournament closer to the start dates,” Karombo said.

Mark Mudimbu, general manager of Sorghum Beer business, unveiled the sponsorship package.

Delta Beverages are also past sponsors of the Natbrew Cup and also funded the annual end-of-year tournament that used to feature the soccer stars of the year and Highlanders.

Yesterday’s function was also attended by officials from PSL partners Mbada Diamonds and various personalities from the football industry.
