The employee, who worked as a lineman, was nabbed by residents after being found loading the poles into an open truck.

Bulawayo police confirmed the incident and said they were still investigating the case.

“I can confirm that report and the case is still under investigation,” said Assistant Inspector Abednico Ncube, who was acting provincial spokesperson.

A Cowdray Park resident said the alleged thief had tried to bribe them when they cornered him.

“We found him busy loading six poles in the truck and we asked him where he was taking the poles to. He said he was taking them to one businessman in the rural areas. He said he was selling the poles for $75 each,” said the resident.

“He was carrying a satchel with money inside and even tried to bribe us with $3 000, but we refused. We called the police who swiftly arrived and arrested him,” the resident added.

There has been an increase of theft involving Zesa employees.

Last month, a Zimbabwean Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company employee was jailed for 18 months after being convicted of stealing a 500kVA transformer in Harare.

In February, residents of Magwegwe and Richmond were left in the dark for several weeks after thieves stole Zesa cables and transformers.
