Naaz will be hoping that the country’s athletes would use the championships to gain qualifying times ahead of the World Junior Championships that will be held in the United States in July and the Youth Olympic Games in China in August this year.

The tournament was postponed last year because of leadership crisis in South Africa.

This also saw the cancellation of the Confederation African Athletes Southern Region cross-country championships. But Athletics South Africa seems to have put its house in order.

Naaz president Tendai Tagara said he was confident the association would come up with a strong team that will represent the country in South Africa.

“We received the invitation letter yesterday (Monday) from CAA to take part at the Southern Region Junior championships in South Africa next month. We are still finalising the number of athletes we are going, but we are targeting 30,” he said.
