Ncube said the accusation proved the point he had always been making that there were leaders who were in a perennial state of denial.

Ncube said Tsvangirai’s strategy of violence, indiscriminate suspensions and rallies to denigrate those opposed to him had exploded in his face and was now looking for a scapegoat.

“Now they are coming up with theories which even idiots won’t believe,” he said.

“Where in the world would you find a plan concocted by me, implemented by (President Robert) Mugabe and sponsored by the West? To imagine such a thing reminds me of the old adage that ‘those whom God wishes to destroy, he first makes mad’ — that is the perfect response to the allegations made by (MDC-T spokesperson Douglas) Mwonzora.”

Ncube told Southern Eye that the 2008 and 2013 unity bid had failed because those who violated the party’s fundamental values failed to acknowledge their actions.

“A lot of things went wrong; we refused to acknowledge things that we did wrong,” he added.
