The incident took place when Chiyangwa had gone to see the party’s provincial vice-chairperson CM Dube to discuss party business.

Chiyangwa refused to comment when contacted yesterday while Chiponda could not be reached on his mobile phone.

However, investigations by Southern Eye revealed that Chiyangwa filed an assault charge against Chiponda at Bulawayo Central Police Station in case number (IR) 3620/14.

A source close to the matter said Chiyangwa was allegedly assaulted at around midday when Chiponda bulldozed his way into Dube’s office seeking audience with him while he was still discussing party issues with Chiyangwa.

“That’s when Chiyangwa asked why he had no respect since he was in the office by appointment yet he just bulldozed his way. That’s when Chiponda slapped Chiyangwa once,” the source said.

“Chiponda had to be restrained by other party members who were in the office who included women’s league chairperson Ever Bitu from further assaulting Chiyangwa who did not retaliate.”

In January, Chiyangwa was also assaulted by unknown assailants and hospitalised at the United Bulawayo Hospitals.
