Wellington Sibanda (25) appeared before Kwekwe resident magistrate Taurai Manwere yesterday for confirmation of charges over allegations that he struck and killed his baby Shalom with an empty beer bottle on October 14 last year.

It is the State’s case that Sibanda arrived home at Zedi Mine in Silobela drunk at around 6pm and had a heated argument with his wife Aisha Khan, whom he accused of infidelity.

He then allegedly swung an empty beer bottle with the intention of hitting Khan, but she ducked and the bottle landed on Shalom’s head.

Sibanda rushed his daughter to Kwekwe General Hospital in his car, but she died on admission.

After the death of Shalom, Sibanda is alleged to have fled his home for a few days before handing himself in to the police and was formally charged.

In a warned and cautioned statement, Sibanda admitted to having struck and killed his daughter, but would have to go through a full trial according to the law.

A post mortem report showed that the baby suffered a skull fracture which was 6x6cm deep and wide as a result of the bottle crashing into her head. Sibanda is currently out of custody on bail.
