The event to be held at the college in Bulawayo’s Montrose suburb would be open to members of the public.

Dumisani Nkomo, the organiser of the event told Southern Eye that a host of actitivities such as a modelling contest, poetry, music and a braai had been lined for the day.

“Celebrating Africa Day should not be formal, but allow casual dress and celebration through music and arts,” he said. “We are inviting all to come dressed in African attires, to be African in every way and to come and enjoy being an African.”

Africa Day is the annual commemoration on May 25 of the 1963 founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) now known as the African Union.

On this day, leaders of 30 of the 32 independent African states at the time signed a founding charter in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to set up the OAU.

Africa Day is observed as a public holiday in only five African countries, which are Ghana, Mali, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

However, celebrations are held in some African countries, as well as by Africans in the Diaspora.

Masiyephambili College has been outstanding this year as it defied the notion that Matabeleland schools were relatively weak in science subjects by recording an extraordinary mark of 100% in mathematics and physical science in the 2013 ‘O’ Level examinations early this year.
