Christopher Nxumalo (49) of Singukwe village pleaded guilty to charges of contravening the Domestic Violence Act when he appeared before Gwanda magistrate Arafat Kozanai. For the State, Getrude Zvidzai told the court that on May 6, Nxumalo, who in 2011 was issued with a protection order prohibiting him from calling his wife a prostitute or verbally abusing her, arrived home drunk and asked for his supper.

Nxumalo’s daughter, who had prepared the food, served him the meal. While eating, Nxumalo started complaining to his daughter about too much salt in the relish.

His wife intervened saying it was because of the fertiliser applied in the garden before the harvest of the vegetables.

This did not go down well with Nxumalo who started hurling insults at his wife calling her a prostitute. He assaulted her with clenched fists ordering her to leave his homestead.

The wife reported the matter to the police, leading to Nxumalo’s arrest.
