TSHOLOTSHO Rural District Council has embarked on a computerised billing process and is set to repossess more than 1 000 stands under its jurisdiction in the next 13 days.

CHIEF REPORTER The council is also in the process of updating its stands register and has given a June 14 deadline for owners to update their stands or risk them being repossessed.

“Notice is hereby given that Tsholotsho RDC is in the process of updating its stands register in preparation for computerised billing, assurance of leases and application of title deeds. Council wishes to advise owners of stands to report to council by June 14 2014, failure of which council will repossess and reallocate the said stands,” the council said.

Although the affected stands are 178, the rural council said the exercise also applied to old stands which are 1 307.

Local authorities periodically repossess undeveloped stands without paying compensation if the owner fails to develop the stand for two years. Late last year,  Local Government minister Ignatius Chombo ordered all  urban and rural councils to  surrender houses and residential stands repossessed from aspiring home owners who failed to pay for them due to lack of money.

Chombo said councils which were run by the MDC formations from 2000 up to July last year, should have given residents at least 20 years to pay for the houses and residential stands.
