They won the 2014 edition after finishing on 50 points counting out  Harare golfer Agrippa Murangwanda and Getrude Katsidzira  from Hwange in the four-ball better-ball competition that was dominated by  golfers from the coal mining town.

“It is my first time to win this competition. I am very happy. I feel great. When the draw came out we sat down with my partner and we strategised. We came up with a game plan and strategising helped us,” Moyo said.

It was an improvement from  Katsidzira who  came third in last year’s  competition on 48 points partnering Christian Lungu.

The third spot was decide by count-out as Cephas  Ncube and Terry Tshamala both from Hwange got 49 points.  Diamond  Jackson (Elephant Hills) and Johns Dube from Hwange got the same number of points.

Josphat  Phiri  from Hwange won the nearest  to the pin on hole number four while Johanne Mutambe from Bulawayo and Kenneth Maunga (Hwange)  won the nearest to the pin on hole number 11 and 13 respectively with champion Dumani also  winning the nearest to the pin on hole number six.

Another Hwange golfer, Edwin Moyo won the longest driver in the men’s section while Matron Mguni won the longest drive in the women’s category.

The Hwange captain explained why Hwange golfers dominated the event.

“Hwange golfers performed well in this tournament because they know the course very well. I alluded before that the course was in an immaculate condition as well. We practise daily on the course, so we know a few tricks on how to play here,” Moyo said.

The golf tournament is aimed at raising funds for widows and orphans of the Kamandama Mine Disaster which  claimed 427 lives on June 6 1972 at Kamandama underground shaft.
