HARARE – Diamonds worth an unspecified value belonging to closed diamond mine Gye Nyame Resources have gone missing, the firm’s judicial manager has revealed. Non-governmental organisations have claimed that Zimbabwe has lost billions of dollars through diamond smuggling since the discovery of the Marange gem field almost eight years ago.

In his report at the High Court on Wednesday, provisional judicial manager Winsley Militala told creditors that he could not locate the company’s diamonds which the company’s employees said had been sent to the Minerals Marketing Corporation (MMCZ).

“I have engaged MMCZ and in their paragraph response to me, they don’t have any record of any parcels from Gye Nyame. The only avenue that I have now is to go through the security personnel who sealed the parcel at Chiadzwa, who delivered it to MMCZ,” he said.

Militala said he would seek to locate the company’s other assets and sell them to pay security staff at the mine, who have gone for months without getting paid. “All efforts are being done to ensure that operations at the mine resume.

We are making every effort engage ZMDC, a major shareholder, and also every effort is being done with the assistance of our legal counsel to engage the minister of mines. We just want clarity on the issue pertaining to the cancellation of the licence.”
